Ratio and proportion · 2 marks
The ratio of boys to girls in a club is \(3 : 5\). There are 18 boys.
How many girls are in the club?
Worked answer
- 3 parts = 18 boys, so 1 part = 6.
- Girls: 5 × 6 = 30.
Answer: \(30\)
Algebraic manipulation · 2 marks
Expand and simplify \((y - 5)(y + 2)\)
Worked answer
- y × y = y², y × 2 = 2y, −5 × y = −5y, −5 × 2 = −10.
- 2y − 5y = −3y.
Answer: \(y^2 - 3y - 10\)
Graphical representation of data · 4 marks
60 people chose a drink: water, milk, juice or cola. In a pie chart of the results, the angle for water is 96°. 24 people chose juice and 9 chose cola.
Work out the number of people who chose milk and the angle of the milk sector.
Worked answer
- Each person is 360 ÷ 60 = 6°, so water is 96 ÷ 6 = 16 people.
- Milk: 60 − 16 − 24 − 9 = 11 people.
- Angle: 11 × 6 = 66°.
Answer: \(11\) people, \(66°\)

What this paper covers
Both Foundation tier papers can test the whole 4MA1 specification at Foundation level:
- Numbers and the number system
- Equations, formulae and identities
- Sequences, functions and graphs
- Geometry and trigonometry
- Vectors and transformation geometry
- Statistics and probability
We haven't mapped this paper question by question yet, so here are our revision units for the whole specification. Each opens the practice for that unit.
Formula booklet
International GCSE Mathematics A formulae sheet (Higher tier) · Pearson Edexcel · 4MA1 specification, Appendix 5 (current)
4MA1 has no separate booklet: the Higher tier formulae sheet is printed inside every exam paper and in Appendix 5 of the specification (the link).

Questions students ask
Where is the June 2018 Paper 2F mark scheme?
The mark scheme button above opens Pearson's own copy.
What are the grade boundaries for 4MA1 June 2018?
Pearson publishes the official boundaries for every series on its grade boundaries page (opens in a new tab). They are set for the qualification (both papers together), so we link there rather than quote them.
What is the difference between 1F and 1FR?
R papers are the version sat in some time zones. They follow the same specification, length and mark scheme style, so both are good practice.
