Written and checked by us, not taken from the Pearson paper. Tap "Worked answer" to see every step.

  1. Degree of accuracy · 2 marks

The number of people at a concert is 3500, correct to the nearest 100

    (a) Write down the least possible number of people.

    (b) Write down the greatest possible number of people.

    Worked answer
    1. To the nearest 100, the number is within 50 of 3500: from 3450 up to (but not including) 3550.
    2. People are counted in whole numbers, so the greatest possible number is 3549.

    Answer: (a) \(3450\) (b) \(3549\)

  2. Transformation geometry · 1 marks

    A translation maps the point \(A(2, 3)\) to the point \(A'(-1, 7)\).

Write down the column vector of the translation.

    Worked answer
    1. The x-coordinate changes by −1 − 2 = −3.
    2. The y-coordinate changes by 7 − 3 = 4.

    Answer: \(\begin{pmatrix} -3 \\ 4 \end{pmatrix}\)

  3. Statistical measures · 3 marks

Write down five positive whole numbers that have a mode of 4, a median of 5 and a mean of 6.

    Worked answer
    1. Mean 6 means the total is 5 × 6 = 30.
    2. Median 5 means the middle number is 5; mode 4 means 4 appears most often, so use 4, 4, 5.
    3. The last two must add to 30 − 13 = 17 and be different from each other and more than 5, for example 8 and 9.

    Answer: For example \(4, 4, 5, 8, 9\)

What this paper covers

Both Foundation tier papers can test the whole 4MA1 specification at Foundation level:

We haven't mapped this paper question by question yet, so here are our revision units for the whole specification. Each opens the practice for that unit.

Questions students ask

Where is the January 2023 Paper 2F mark scheme?

The mark scheme button above opens Pearson's own copy.

What are the grade boundaries for 4MA1 January 2023?

Pearson publishes the official boundaries for every series on its grade boundaries page (opens in a new tab). They are set for the qualification (both papers together), so we link there rather than quote them.

What is the difference between 1F and 1FR?

R papers are the version sat in some time zones. They follow the same specification, length and mark scheme style, so both are good practice.
