Ratio and proportion · 4 marks
Orange paint is made by mixing red paint and yellow paint in the ratio \(2 : 3\).
Red paint costs £6 per litre and yellow paint costs £4.50 per litre.
Work out the cost of making 15 litres of orange paint.
Worked answer
- 15 litres in the ratio 2 : 3: one part = 15 ÷ 5 = 3 litres.
- Red: 6 litres; yellow: 9 litres.
- Cost: 6 × £6 + 9 × £4.50 = £36 + £40.50 = £76.50.
Answer: £76.50
Graphs · 3 marks
A cyclist rides away from home at a constant speed for 2 hours and travels 30 km. She stops for 30 minutes, then cycles straight home at a constant speed, taking 1.5 hours.
(a) Work out her speed for the first part of the journey.
(b) Work out her speed on the way home.
Worked answer
- (a) Speed = distance ÷ time = 30 ÷ 2 = 15 km/h.
- (b) 30 ÷ 1.5 = 20 km/h.
Answer: (a) \(15\) km/h (b) \(20\) km/h
Transformation geometry · 1 marks
The point \((2, 5)\) is rotated through 180° about the origin.
Write down the coordinates of its image.
Worked answer
- A half turn about the origin changes the sign of both coordinates: (−2, −5).
Answer: \((-2, -5)\)

What this paper covers
Both Foundation tier papers can test the whole 4MA1 specification at Foundation level:
- Numbers and the number system
- Equations, formulae and identities
- Sequences, functions and graphs
- Geometry and trigonometry
- Vectors and transformation geometry
- Statistics and probability
We haven't mapped this paper question by question yet, so here are our revision units for the whole specification. Each opens the practice for that unit.
Formula booklet
International GCSE Mathematics A formulae sheet (Higher tier) · Pearson Edexcel · 4MA1 specification, Appendix 5 (current)
4MA1 has no separate booklet: the Higher tier formulae sheet is printed inside every exam paper and in Appendix 5 of the specification (the link).

Questions students ask
Where is the January 2022 Paper 2F mark scheme?
The mark scheme button above opens Pearson's own copy.
What are the grade boundaries for 4MA1 January 2022?
Pearson publishes the official boundaries for every series on its grade boundaries page (opens in a new tab). They are set for the qualification (both papers together), so we link there rather than quote them.
What is the difference between 1F and 1FR?
R papers are the version sat in some time zones. They follow the same specification, length and mark scheme style, so both are good practice.
