Written and checked by us, not taken from the Pearson paper. Tap "Worked answer" to see every step.

  1. Graphs · 2 marks

Write down the equation of the straight line that has gradient \(-2\) and passes through the point \((0, 5)\).

    Worked answer
    1. The gradient is m = −2.
    2. The line passes through (0, 5), so the y-intercept is c = 5.
    3. y = −2x + 5.

    Answer: \(y = -2x + 5\)

  2. Transformation geometry · 4 marks

    Triangle \(P\) has vertices \((2, 2)\), \((4, 2)\) and \((2, 3)\). Triangle \(Q\) has vertices \((2, 2)\), \((8, 2)\) and \((2, 5)\).

    (a) Describe fully the single transformation that maps triangle \(P\) onto triangle \(Q\).

    (b) Which stay the same under this transformation: the angles or the side lengths?

    Worked answer
    1. (a) The side along y = 2 goes from length 2 to length 6, so the scale factor is 3.
    2. (2, 2) does not move, so it is the centre: (4, 2) is 2 right of it and its image (8, 2) is 6 right; (2, 3) is 1 up and its image (2, 5) is 3 up.
    3. (b) An enlargement keeps the angles but changes the lengths.

Answer: (a) an enlargement, scale factor \(3\), centre \((2, 2)\) (b) the angles

  3. Graphical representation of data · 3 marks

There are 50 students in a year group: 22 boys and 28 girls. Each student walks or takes the bus to school. 25 students walk, and 12 of the girls walk.

    (a) How many boys walk to school?

    (b) How many girls take the bus?

    Worked answer
    1. (a) Walkers: 25 in total and 12 are girls, so 25 − 12 = 13 boys walk.
    2. (b) There are 28 girls and 12 walk, so 28 − 12 = 16 girls take the bus.

    Answer: (a) \(13\) (b) \(16\)

What this paper covers

Both Foundation tier papers can test the whole 4MA1 specification at Foundation level:

We haven't mapped this paper question by question yet, so here are our revision units for the whole specification. Each opens the practice for that unit.

4MA1 has no separate booklet: the Higher tier formulae sheet is printed inside every exam paper and in Appendix 5 of the specification (the link).

Questions students ask

Where is the January 2019 Paper 2F mark scheme?

The mark scheme button above opens Pearson's own copy.

What are the grade boundaries for 4MA1 January 2019?

Pearson publishes the official boundaries for every series on its grade boundaries page (opens in a new tab). They are set for the qualification (both papers together), so we link there rather than quote them.

What is the difference between 1F and 1FR?

R papers are the version sat in some time zones. They follow the same specification, length and mark scheme style, so both are good practice.
