  1. Ratio and proportion · 3 marks

It takes 6 workers 15 days to build a wall. All the workers work at the same rate.

    (a) How long would it take 9 workers?

    (b) The wall must be built in 5 days. How many workers are needed?

    Worked answer
    1. The job takes 6 × 15 = 90 worker-days.
    2. (a) 90 ÷ 9 = 10 days.
    3. (b) 90 ÷ 5 = 18 workers.

    Answer: (a) \(10\) days (b) \(18\) workers

  2. Construction · 2 marks

    Triangle \(ABC\) is to be constructed with \(AB = 8\) cm, angle \(BAC = 50°\) and angle \(ABC = 60°\).

    (a) Describe how to construct it with a ruler and a protractor.

    (b) Work out the size of angle \(ACB\).

    Worked answer
    1. (a) Draw AB 8 cm long. Use the protractor to draw a line at 50° from A and a line at 60° from B. C is where they cross.
    2. (b) 180 − 50 − 60 = 70°.

    Answer: (a) Draw \(AB\), measure \(50°\) at \(A\) and \(60°\) at \(B\); the lines meet at \(C\). (b) \(70°\)

  3. Statistical measures · 4 marks

The heights, \(h\) cm, of 25 plants are grouped:

    \(150 \lt h \le 155\): 3, \(155 \lt h \le 160\): 8, \(160 \lt h \le 165\): 10, \(165 \lt h \le 170\): 4

    (a) Work out an estimate for the mean height.

    (b) Explain why your answer is only an estimate.

    Worked answer
    1. (a) 152.5×3 + 157.5×8 + 162.5×10 + 167.5×4 = 457.5 + 1260 + 1625 + 670 = 4012.5.
    2. 4012.5 ÷ 25 = 160.5 cm.
    3. (b) We only know which class each height is in, so we assume each is at the midpoint.

Answer: (a) \(160.5\) cm (b) the exact heights are not known, so the midpoints are used

What this paper covers

Both Foundation tier papers can test the whole 4MA1 specification at Foundation level:

We haven't mapped this paper question by question yet, so here are our revision units for the whole specification. Each opens the practice for that unit.

Questions students ask

Where is the June 2019 Paper 2F mark scheme?

The mark scheme button above opens Pearson's own copy.

What are the grade boundaries for 4MA1 June 2019?

Pearson publishes the official boundaries for every series on its grade boundaries page (opens in a new tab). They are set for the qualification (both papers together), so we link there rather than quote them.

What is the difference between 1F and 1FR?

R papers are the version sat in some time zones. They follow the same specification, length and mark scheme style, so both are good practice.
