Quadratic equations · 2 marks
(a) Factorise \(x^2 + 10x + 16\)
(b) Hence solve \(x^2 + 10x + 16 = 0\)
Worked answer
- (a) 2 × 8 = 16 and 2 + 8 = 10.
- (b) x + 2 = 0 or x + 8 = 0.
Answer: (a) \((x + 2)(x + 8)\) (b) \(x = -2\) or \(x = -8\)
Graphs · 3 marks
The line \(3x + 2y = 12\) crosses the \(x\)-axis at \(A\) and the \(y\)-axis at \(B\).
(a) Find the coordinates of \(A\) and \(B\).
(b) Find the coordinates of the midpoint of \(AB\).
Worked answer
- (a) On the x-axis y = 0: 3x = 12, x = 4. On the y-axis x = 0: 2y = 12, y = 6.
- (b) Midpoint: ((4 + 0) ÷ 2, (0 + 6) ÷ 2) = (2, 3).
Answer: (a) \(A(4, 0)\), \(B(0, 6)\) (b) \((2, 3)\)
Probability · 2 marks
A bag holds one red ball (R) and one blue ball (B). Zara takes a ball at random, puts it back, then takes a ball at random again.
(a) List all the possible outcomes.
(b) Find the probability that both balls are the same colour.
Worked answer
- (a) List systematically: first ball R then B, each with the second ball R or B.
- (b) Same colour: RR and BB, 2 out of 4 = 1/2.
Answer: (a) RR, RB, BR, BB (b) \(\frac{1}{2}\)

What this paper covers
Both Foundation tier papers can test the whole 4MA1 specification at Foundation level:
- Numbers and the number system
- Equations, formulae and identities
- Sequences, functions and graphs
- Geometry and trigonometry
- Vectors and transformation geometry
- Statistics and probability
We haven't mapped this paper question by question yet, so here are our revision units for the whole specification. Each opens the practice for that unit.
Formula booklet
International GCSE Mathematics A formulae sheet (Higher tier) · Pearson Edexcel · 4MA1 specification, Appendix 5 (current)
4MA1 has no separate booklet: the Higher tier formulae sheet is printed inside every exam paper and in Appendix 5 of the specification (the link).

Questions students ask
Where is the January 2023 Paper 1F mark scheme?
The mark scheme button above opens Pearson's own copy.
What are the grade boundaries for 4MA1 January 2023?
Pearson publishes the official boundaries for every series on its grade boundaries page (opens in a new tab). They are set for the qualification (both papers together), so we link there rather than quote them.
What is the difference between 1F and 1FR?
R papers are the version sat in some time zones. They follow the same specification, length and mark scheme style, so both are good practice.
