Try 3 4MA1 questions like these

Written and checked by us, not taken from the Pearson paper. Tap "Worked answer" to see every step.

  1. Powers and roots · 2 marks

    \(A = 2^3 \times 3 \times 5^2\) and \(B = 2^2 \times 3^2 \times 5\)

    (a) Find the HCF of \(A\) and \(B\).

    (b) Find the LCM of \(A\) and \(B\).

    Worked answer
    1. (a) HCF: the lowest power of each common prime: 2² × 3 × 5 = 60.
    2. (b) LCM: the highest power of each prime: 2³ × 3² × 5² = 8 × 9 × 25 = 1800.

    Answer: (a) \(60\) (b) \(1800\)

  2. Graphs · 2 marks

Find the gradient of the straight line through the points \((1, 2)\) and \((4, 11)\).

    Worked answer
    1. Gradient = increase in y ÷ increase in x.
    2. (11 − 2) ÷ (4 − 1) = 9 ÷ 3 = 3.

    Answer: \(3\)

  3. Trigonometry and Pythagoras' theorem · 2 marks

A right-angled triangle has a hypotenuse of 13 cm and one other side of 5 cm.

Work out the length of the third side.

    Worked answer
    1. The third side is a shorter side: a² = 13² − 5² = 169 − 25 = 144.
    2. a = 12 cm.

    Answer: \(12\) cm

What this paper covers

Both Foundation tier papers can test the whole 4MA1 specification at Foundation level:

We haven't mapped this paper question by question yet, so here are our revision units for the whole specification. Each opens the practice for that unit.

Formula booklet

International GCSE Mathematics A formulae sheet (Higher tier) · Pearson Edexcel · 4MA1 specification, Appendix 5 (current)

4MA1 has no separate booklet: the Higher tier formulae sheet is printed inside every exam paper and in Appendix 5 of the specification (the link).

Questions students ask

Where is the June 2021 Paper 1F mark scheme?

The mark scheme button above opens Pearson's own copy.

What are the grade boundaries for 4MA1 June 2021?

Pearson publishes the official boundaries for every series on its grade boundaries page (opens in a new tab). They are set for the qualification (both papers together), so we link there rather than quote them.

What is the difference between 1F and 1FR?

R papers are the version sat in some time zones. They follow the same specification, length and mark scheme style, so both are good practice.
