Try 3 4MA1 questions like these

Written and checked by us, not taken from the Pearson paper. Tap "Worked answer" to see every step.

  1. Indices and Standard Form

    Write (a) 0.000 070 3 in standard form (b) \(4.6\times10^{6}\) as an ordinary number.

    Worked answer
    1. (a) Move the decimal point 5 places right to get 7.03, so \(7.03\times10^{-5}\).
    2. (b) Move the decimal point 6 places right: 4 600 000.

    Answer: (a) \(7.03\times10^{-5}\) (b) 4 600 000

  2. Simultaneous Equations

    Solve \(y=x-1\) and \(x^2+y^2=13\).

    Worked answer
    1. Substitute: \(x^2+(x-1)^2=13\).
    2. \(2x^2-2x-12=0\), so \(x^2-x-6=0\).
    3. \((x-3)(x+2)=0\): \(x=3,\ y=2\) or \(x=-2,\ y=-3\).

    Answer: \((3,\ 2)\) and \((-2,\ -3)\)

  3. Completing the Square

Write \(x^2+14x+20\) in the form \((x+p)^2+q\).

    Worked answer
    1. Halve 14: \((x+7)^2=x^2+14x+49\).
    2. \(x^2+14x+20=(x+7)^2-49+20\).
    3. \(=(x+7)^2-29\).

    Answer: \((x+7)^2-29\)

Questions students ask

Where is the January 2020 Paper 1H mark scheme?

The mark scheme button above opens Pearson's own copy.

What are the grade boundaries for 4MA1 January 2020?

Pearson publishes the official boundaries for every series on its grade boundaries page (opens in a new tab). They are set for the qualification (both papers together), so we link there rather than quote them.

What is the difference between 1H and 1HR?

R papers are the version sat in some time zones. They follow the same specification, length and mark scheme style, so both are good practice.
