Find the HCF and LCM of 84 and 90.
Worked answer
- \(84=2^2\times3\times7\) and \(90=2\times3^2\times5\).
- HCF: lowest powers of common primes, \(2\times3=6\).
- LCM: highest powers of all primes, \(2^2\times3^2\times5\times7=1260\).
Answer: HCF 6, LCM 1260
-
After a 15% decrease a price is £68. Find the original price.
Worked answer
- After the decrease the price is 85% of the original: multiplier 0.85.
- Original \(=68\div0.85=80\).
Answer: £80
-
The product of two consecutive positive integers is 132. Find them.
Worked answer
- \(n(n+1)=132\), so \(n^2+n-132=0\).
- \((n+12)(n-11)=0\).
- \(n=11\) (positive), so 11 and 12.
Answer: 11 and 12

What this paper covers
Both Higher tier papers can test the whole 4MA1 specification:
- Numbers and the number system
- Equations, formulae and identities
- Sequences, functions and graphs
- Geometry and trigonometry
- Vectors and transformation geometry
- Statistics and probability
We haven't mapped this paper question by question yet, so here are our revision units for the whole specification. Each opens the practice for that unit.

Questions students ask
Where is the January 2020 Paper 2H mark scheme?
The mark scheme button above opens Pearson's own copy.
What are the grade boundaries for 4MA1 January 2020?
Pearson publishes the official boundaries for every series on its grade boundaries page (opens in a new tab). They are set for the qualification (both papers together), so we link there rather than quote them.
What is the difference between 1H and 1HR?
R papers are the version sat in some time zones. They follow the same specification, length and mark scheme style, so both are good practice.
