Worked example 1: Congruence condition
Two triangles each have sides 5 cm and 8 cm with an included angle of \(70^\circ\). Are they congruent?
Solution
- Two sides and the angle between them are equal.
- Yes: congruent by SAS.
Answer: Yes (SAS)

Answer: Yes (SAS)
Try each question before you open the answer. The mark schemes use Edexcel-style marks: M for method, A for accuracy (after the method mark), B for an independent result.
Two triangles have all three pairs of corresponding sides equal. Write down the condition that shows the triangles are congruent.
Answer: SSS
Triangle ABC has AB = 6 cm, angle A = 50° and angle B = 70°. Triangle DEF has DE = 6 cm, angle D = 50° and angle F = 60°. Show that the triangles are congruent.
Answer: Congruent (ASA), since angle E = 70°
ABCD is a parallelogram. Prove that triangle ABC is congruent to triangle CDA.
Answer: Congruent by SSS (proof)

Either Higher tier paper, 1H or 2H, can test congruent triangles: both cover the whole Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A (4MA1) specification and both allow a calculator. Show your method, because most marks are for working.
