The 0580 Extended papers

Most school mocks for 0580 Extended are Paper 2 (no calculator) and Paper 4 (calculator), in the format of the 2025 syllabus. Half of the marks are without a calculator, so a mock tests written methods as much as topics. Ask your teacher which papers and topics your school's mock uses. The real 0580 Extended exam is:

2-week 0580 Extended mock revision plan

Ten days on the topics where 0580 Extended students lose the most marks, in the order our Examiner Insights rank them, then four days on papers. Each day links to free exam-style questions with worked answers.

  1. Day 1

Accuracy: keep full values, round once, 3 s.f. and 1 d.p. for angles

Why: Both accuracy points come from the report's general comments, so they apply to every paper; on Papers 3 and 4 they can cost marks on almost any question.

Cambridge IGCSE Maths 0580 Limits of Accuracy Questions · Cambridge IGCSE Maths 0580 Estimation and Rounding Questions

  2. Day 2

Combined events: multiply along a route, add different routes

Why: A combined-probability question on Paper 0580/22 was answered well by only a minority of candidates in June 2024.

Cambridge IGCSE Maths 0580 Combined Events and Tree Diagrams Questions

  3. Day 3

Units in area and volume (cm, m, litres)

Why: Very few candidates converted units correctly in a June 2024 volume question, and the 2025 specimen commentary also stresses checking units.

Cambridge IGCSE Maths 0580 Surface Area and Volume Questions · Cambridge IGCSE Maths 0580 Units of Measure Questions

  4. Day 4

    Map scales and bearings

Why: Both are named among the topics Core candidates found challenging in June 2024.

Cambridge IGCSE Maths 0580 Scale Drawings and Bearings Questions

  5. Day 5

    Inverse and composite functions (Extended)

Why: Cambridge's commented answers for the 2025 specimen papers single out both; functions are an Extended-only sub-topic.

Cambridge IGCSE Maths 0580 Functions Questions

  6. Day 6

    Standard form and surds

Why: Standard form was named as challenging on a June 2024 Core paper; surds are on the non-calculator Extended paper from 2025.

Cambridge IGCSE Maths 0580 Standard Form Questions · Cambridge IGCSE Maths 0580 Surds Questions

  7. Day 7

Speed-time graphs: gradient, area and units

Why: The specimen Paper 4 commentary flags the units and the sign of a deceleration.

Cambridge IGCSE Maths 0580 Real-Life Graphs Questions

  8. Day 8

    Set notation and Venn diagrams

Why: Named as challenging on a June 2024 Core paper.

Cambridge IGCSE Maths 0580 Sets and Venn Diagrams Questions

  9. Day 9

    Expanding brackets with negative signs

Why: Named in the 2025 specimen-answer commentary.

Cambridge IGCSE Maths 0580 Expanding and Factorising Questions

  10. Day 10

    Non-calculator methods for Paper 2

Why: Half of the Extended marks are on Paper 2, with no calculator: practise fractions, surds, standard form and exact values by hand.

    Cambridge IGCSE Maths 0580 non-calculator papers · 0580 non-calculator mini-paper

  11. Day 11

    Paper 2, timed

Sit a Paper 2 from 2025 onwards (the papers changed with the 2025 syllabus) or the specimen paper from the past papers in one go: 2 hours, no calculator.

  12. Day 12

Mark it and fix the gaps

Mark it with the mark scheme, put every lost mark in My mistakes, then redo the questions on your two weakest topics from the days above.

  13. Day 13

    Paper 4, timed

Sit the Paper 4 from the same series: 2 hours, with your calculator.

  14. Day 14

    Formulas and a light review

Go over the 0580 formula sheet, check your calculator is in degrees, and rest the evening before.

The mistakes that cost 0580 Extended students marks

From our summary of Cambridge International’s examiner reports. Check your mock against each one.

  1. No working, so no part marks

Fix: Write one line per step (what you work out, then the number). Keep going to the answer even if you are unsure of an earlier step.

  2. Rounding in the middle of a calculation

Fix: Keep every intermediate value in the calculator (use the memory or ANS key, or write at least 4 or 5 significant figures). Round only the final answer.

  3. Ignoring the 3 s.f. (1 d.p. for angles) accuracy rule

Fix: Unless a question says otherwise, give non-exact answers to 3 significant figures and angles in degrees to 1 decimal place. Write the longer calculator value first, then the rounded answer.

  4. Combined events: adding where you should multiply

Fix: For A and then B (independent) multiply. Add only to combine different outcomes that cannot both happen. A tree diagram makes each route clear.

  5. Inverse functions: left in terms of y, or a sign slip

Fix: Write y = f(x), rearrange to make x the subject one step at a time, then swap x and y so the answer is f⁻¹(x) in terms of x. Check: f(f⁻¹(x)) should give x.
