What the syllabus asks

Summarised in our own words: check the exact wording in the official 0580 syllabus.

Classifying and Interpreting Data questions: Core

For everyone: Core students (Papers 1 and 3) and Extended students (Papers 2 and 4).

Question 1 Core non-calculator · easy

Say whether each type of data is categorical, discrete or continuous.
(a) eye colour (b) number of brothers and sisters (c) height (d) shoe size

Show the worked answer
  1. (a) Eye colour is a category, not a number.
  2. (b) You count brothers and sisters: discrete.
  3. (c) Height is measured and can take any value in a range: continuous.
  4. (d) Shoe sizes come in steps (e.g. \(5\), \(5\frac{1}{2}\), \(6\)): discrete.

Answer: (a) categorical (b) discrete (c) continuous (d) discrete

Question 2 Core non-calculator · easy

Ten students said how many pets they have: \(2, 3, 3, 1, 4, 2, 3, 2, 3, 5\)
(a) How many students have \(3\) pets?
(b) Which number of pets is the most common?

Show the worked answer
  1. Make a frequency table: \(1\): \(1\), \(2\): \(3\), \(3\): \(4\), \(4\): \(1\), \(5\): \(1\).
  2. (a) \(4\) students. (b) \(3\) pets has the highest frequency.

Answer: (a) \(4\) (b) \(3\) pets

Question 3 Core non-calculator · easy · 2 marks

Is each type of data categorical, discrete or continuous?

(a) the height of a tree (b) the number of cars in a car park

Show the answer and mark scheme
  • B1 (a) continuous
  • B1 (b) discrete

Answer: (a) continuous (b) discrete

Question 4 Core non-calculator · easy · 2 marks

The table shows the rainfall, in mm, in a town.

\[\begin{array}{c|ccccc} \text{Month} & \text{Jan} & \text{Feb} & \text{Mar} & \text{Apr} & \text{May} \\ \hline \text{Rainfall (mm)} & 42 & 35 & 58 & 61 & 47 \end{array}\]

(a) Which month was the wettest?

(b) How much more rain fell in the wettest month than in the driest month?

Show the answer and mark scheme
  • B1 (a) April
  • B1 (b) 26 mm

Answer: (a) April (b) 26 mm

Question 5 Core non-calculator · medium

The two-way table shows how \(90\) students travel to school. Some numbers are missing.
Find the four missing numbers: Year 11 walk, Year 10 bus, Year 10 total and Year 11 total.

WalkBusCarTotal
Year 10149
Year 112211
Total30402090
Show the worked answer
  1. Year 11 walk: \(30 - 14 = 16\). Year 10 bus: \(40 - 22 = 18\).
  2. Year 10 total: \(14 + 18 + 9 = 41\). Year 11 total: \(16 + 22 + 11 = 49\) (check: \(41 + 49 = 90\)).

Answer: Year 11 walk \(16\), Year 10 bus \(18\), Year 10 total \(41\), Year 11 total \(49\)

Question 6 Core non-calculator · medium

Class A's test marks have mean \(62\) and range \(30\). Class B's have mean \(58\) and range \(12\).
Make two comparisons between the classes.

Show the worked answer
  1. The mean is higher for Class A, so Class A did better on average.
  2. The range is smaller for Class B, so Class B's marks are more consistent.

Answer: Class A did better on average (higher mean); Class B was more consistent (smaller range)

Question 7 Core non-calculator · medium

In a pictogram, one symbol stands for \(8\) cars. On Monday the row shows \(3\) whole symbols and half a symbol.
How many cars does Monday's row show?

Show the worked answer
  1. \(3 \times 8 = 24\) and half a symbol is \(4\).
  2. \(24 + 4 = 28\)

Answer: \(28\)

Question 8 Core non-calculator · medium

The table shows the number of goals a team scored in \(20\) matches.
(a) Find \(x\).
(b) In how many matches did the team score at least \(2\) goals?

Goals01234
Frequency475x1
Show the worked answer
  1. (a) \(4 + 7 + 5 + x + 1 = 20\), so \(x = 3\).
  2. (b) \(5 + 3 + 1 = 9\) matches.

Answer: (a) \(x = 3\) (b) \(9\)

Question 9 Core non-calculator · medium · 1 mark

The times taken to solve a puzzle are recorded to the nearest second. Explain why time is continuous data, even though the recorded values are whole numbers.

Show the answer and mark scheme
  • B1 time can take any value in a range; it is measured and only rounded to the nearest second

Answer: time is measured and can take any value; it is only rounded for recording

Questions students ask

Which Cambridge 0580 papers can test classifying and interpreting data?

Classifying and Interpreting Data is on both tiers (syllabus 9.1, 9.2), so it can come up on Core Papers 1 (non-calculator) and 3 (calculator), and Extended Papers 2 (non-calculator) and 4 (calculator). Extended candidates also need the Extended parts listed on this page. Half of each tier's marks are on a non-calculator paper, so practise the non-calculator questions without one.

Are these Cambridge past-paper questions?

No. Every question here was written for IGCSE Math Revision in the style of the 0580 papers, and each answer was checked independently before publishing. For real exam practice, use the Cambridge past papers linked from our 0580 past papers page.

Where can I practise more classifying and interpreting data questions?

In the 0580 practice for topic 9 (Statistics), where every question is marked and tagged Core or Extended. Practice is part of the IGCSE plan, with a free preview; the questions on this page are free.
