What the syllabus asks

Summarised in our own words: check the exact wording in the official 0580 syllabus.

Statistical Charts and Diagrams questions: Core

For everyone: Core students (Papers 1 and 3) and Extended students (Papers 2 and 4).

Question 1 Core non-calculator · easy

In a survey of \(72\) students, \(18\) chose football as their favourite sport.
Work out the angle for football in a pie chart.

Show the worked answer
  1. Each student is \(360 \div 72 = 5°\).
  2. \(18 \times 5 = 90°\)

Answer: \(90°\)

Question 2 Core non-calculator · easy

A pie chart shows how \(180\) people travel to work. The angle for bus is \(84°\).
How many people travel by bus?

Show the worked answer
  1. \(\frac{84}{360} \times 180 = 42\)

Answer: \(42\)

Question 3 Core non-calculator · easy · 2 marks

A bar chart shows the favourite fruit of some students: apples 7, bananas 12, grapes 5, oranges 6.

(a) How many students were asked?

(b) What fraction of the students chose bananas? Give your answer in its simplest form.

Show the answer and mark scheme
  • B1 (a) 30
  • B1 (b) 2/5

Answer: (a) 30 (b) \(\frac{2}{5}\)

Question 4 Core non-calculator · medium

In a pie chart, an angle of \(135°\) stands for \(45\) people.
How many people are shown in the whole pie chart?

Show the worked answer
  1. \(135°\) is \(45\) people, so \(3°\) is \(1\) person.
  2. \(360 \div 3 = 120\) people

Answer: \(120\)

Question 5 Core non-calculator · medium

The stem-and-leaf diagram shows the ages of \(9\) people. Key: \(3 \mid 4\) means \(34\) years.
Find (a) the median (b) the range (c) the mode.

StemLeaf
21 5 8
30 4 4 7
42 6
Show the worked answer
  1. The ages in order: \(21, 25, 28, 30, 34, 34, 37, 42, 46\).
  2. (a) Median: the 5th value, \(34\). (b) Range: \(46 - 21 = 25\). (c) Mode: \(34\).

Answer: (a) \(34\) (b) \(25\) (c) \(34\)

Question 6 Core non-calculator · medium

In a pictogram, one symbol stands for \(6\) books. One row shows \(4\) whole symbols and one third of a symbol.
How many books does the row show?

Show the worked answer
  1. \(4 \times 6 = 24\) and a third of a symbol is \(2\).
  2. \(24 + 2 = 26\)

Answer: \(26\)

Question 7 Core calculator · medium · 3 marks

The table shows how 90 students travel to school.

\[\begin{array}{c|cccc} \text{Method} & \text{Walk} & \text{Bus} & \text{Car} & \text{Cycle} \\ \hline \text{Frequency} & 18 & 27 & 30 & 15 \end{array}\]

Calculate the sector angle for each method in a pie chart.

Show the answer and mark scheme
  • M1 360 ÷ 90 = 4° per student, or one correct fraction of 360
  • A1 two correct angles
  • A1 Walk 72°, Bus 108°, Car 120°, Cycle 60°

Answer: Walk \(72^\circ\), Bus \(108^\circ\), Car \(120^\circ\), Cycle \(60^\circ\)

Question 8 Core non-calculator · hard

A pie chart has four sectors, \(A\), \(B\), \(C\) and \(D\). The angles are \(3x°\), \(2x°\), \(100°\) and \(80°\).
Find the angle of sector \(A\).

Show the worked answer
  1. The angles add to \(360°\): \(5x + 180 = 360\), so \(x = 36\).
  2. Sector \(A\): \(3 \times 36 = 108°\).

Answer: \(108°\)

Question 9 Core non-calculator · hard · 3 marks

A pie chart shows how 240 people voted for three candidates, A, B and C. The angle for A is \(105^\circ\) and the angle for B is \(150^\circ\). How many people voted for C?

Show the answer and mark scheme
  • M1 360 − 105 − 150 (= 105)
  • M1 their 105/360 × 240
  • A1 70

Answer: \(70\)

Questions students ask

Which Cambridge 0580 papers can test statistical charts and diagrams?

Statistical Charts and Diagrams is on both tiers (syllabus 9.4), so it can come up on Core Papers 1 (non-calculator) and 3 (calculator), and Extended Papers 2 (non-calculator) and 4 (calculator). Extended candidates also need the Extended parts listed on this page. Half of each tier's marks are on a non-calculator paper, so practise the non-calculator questions without one.

Are these Cambridge past-paper questions?

No. Every question here was written for IGCSE Math Revision in the style of the 0580 papers, and each answer was checked independently before publishing. For real exam practice, use the Cambridge past papers linked from our 0580 past papers page.

Where can I practise more statistical charts and diagrams questions?

In the 0580 practice for topic 9 (Statistics), where every question is marked and tagged Core or Extended. Practice is part of the IGCSE plan, with a free preview; the questions on this page are free.
