What the syllabus asks

Conditional Probability questions: Extended

Extended content, for Papers 2 and 4.

Question 1 Extended non-calculator · easy

The table shows whether \(30\) students like tea.
A student who likes tea is chosen at random. Find the probability that the student is a girl.

Likes teaDoes not like tea
Boys57
Girls99
Show the worked answer
  1. Students who like tea: \(5 + 9 = 14\).
  2. Girls among them: \(9\), so \(\frac{9}{14}\).

Answer: \(\frac{9}{14}\)

Question 2 Extended non-calculator · medium

In a group of \(50\) people, \(20\) are only in club \(A\), \(12\) are in both clubs, \(10\) are only in club \(B\) and \(8\) are in neither.
A person in club \(B\) is chosen at random. Find the probability that they are also in club \(A\).

Show the worked answer
  1. People in \(B\): \(12 + 10 = 22\).
  2. Of these, \(12\) are in \(A\): \(\frac{12}{22} = \frac{6}{11}\).

Answer: \(\frac{6}{11}\)

Question 3 Extended non-calculator · medium

\(P(A) = 0.4\) and \(P(A \cap B) = 0.12\).
Find \(P(B \mid A)\).

Show the worked answer
  1. \(P(B \mid A) = \frac{P(A \cap B)}{P(A)} = \frac{0.12}{0.4} = 0.3\)

Answer: \(0.3\)

Question 4 Extended non-calculator · medium

A box holds \(4\) red and \(6\) black cards. Two cards are taken at random without replacement.
The first card is red. Find the probability that the second card is also red.

Show the worked answer
  1. After a red card is taken, \(3\) red and \(6\) black cards are left.
  2. \(\frac{3}{9} = \frac{1}{3}\)

Answer: \(\frac{1}{3}\)

Question 5 Extended non-calculator · medium

The table shows how \(80\) students travel to school.
A Year 11 student is chosen at random. Find the probability that they walk.

WalkBus
Year 101820
Year 111230
Show the worked answer
  1. Year 11 students: \(12 + 30 = 42\).
  2. Of these, \(12\) walk: \(\frac{12}{42} = \frac{2}{7}\).

Answer: \(\frac{2}{7}\)

Question 6 Extended non-calculator · hard

A fair six-sided dice is rolled. You are told the score is even.
Find the probability that the score is greater than \(3\).

Show the worked answer
  1. The possible scores are now \(2, 4, 6\).
  2. Greater than \(3\): \(4\) and \(6\), so \(\frac{2}{3}\).

Answer: \(\frac{2}{3}\)

Question 7 Extended non-calculator · hard

The probability that Tom is late for school is \(0.2\). If he is late, the probability he gets a detention is \(0.5\); if he is not late, it is \(0.05\).
(a) Find the probability that Tom gets a detention.
(b) Tom gets a detention. Find the probability that he was late.

Show the worked answer
  1. (a) Late and detention: \(0.2 \times 0.5 = 0.1\). Not late and detention: \(0.8 \times 0.05 = 0.04\). Total \(0.14\).
  2. (b) \(\frac{0.1}{0.14} = \frac{5}{7}\)

Answer: (a) \(0.14\) (b) \(\frac{5}{7}\)

Question 8 Extended non-calculator · hard

A bag holds \(3\) red and \(2\) blue counters. Two are taken at random without replacement.
Given that at least one counter is red, find the probability that both are red.

Show the worked answer
  1. \(P(\text{both red}) = \frac{3}{5} \times \frac{2}{4} = \frac{3}{10}\).
  2. \(P(\text{at least one red}) = 1 - P(\text{both blue}) = 1 - \frac{2}{5} \times \frac{1}{4} = \frac{9}{10}\).
  3. \(\frac{3}{10} \div \frac{9}{10} = \frac{1}{3}\)

Answer: \(\frac{1}{3}\)

Questions students ask

Which Cambridge 0580 papers can test conditional probability?

Conditional Probability is Extended content (syllabus 8.4), so it is tested only on the Extended papers, Paper 2 (non-calculator) and Paper 4 (calculator). Core candidates do not need it.

Are these Cambridge past-paper questions?

No. Every question here was written for IGCSE Math Revision in the style of the 0580 papers, and each answer was checked independently before publishing. For real exam practice, use the Cambridge past papers linked from our 0580 past papers page.

Where can I practise more conditional probability questions?

In the 0580 practice for topic 8 (Probability), where every question is marked and tagged Core or Extended. Practice is part of the IGCSE plan, with a free preview; the questions on this page are free.
