Algebraic Expressions and Substitution questions: Core

For everyone: Core students (Papers 1 and 3) and Extended students (Papers 2 and 4).

Question 1 Core non-calculator · easy

\(a = 3\) and \(b = -2\). Work out the value of
(a) \(4a + 5b\)
(b) \(a^2 - b^2\)
(c) \(ab^2\)

Show the worked answer
  1. (a) \(4 \times 3 + 5 \times (-2) = 12 - 10 = 2\)
  2. (b) \(3^2 - (-2)^2 = 9 - 4 = 5\)
  3. (c) \(b^2 = 4\), so \(ab^2 = 3 \times 4 = 12\)

Answer: (a) \(2\) (b) \(5\) (c) \(12\)

Question 2 Core non-calculator · easy

Pens cost \(x\) cents each and rulers cost \(y\) cents each.
Write an expression for the total cost, in cents, of \(4\) pens and \(3\) rulers.

Show the worked answer
  1. \(4\) pens cost \(4x\) cents and \(3\) rulers cost \(3y\) cents.
  2. Total: \(4x + 3y\).

Answer: \(4x + 3y\)

Question 3 Core calculator · easy · 2 marks

\(v = u + at\). Find \(v\) when \(u = 4.5\), \(a = 9.8\) and \(t = 3\).

Show the answer and mark scheme
  • M1 4.5 + 9.8 × 3
  • A1 33.9

Answer: \(33.9\)

Question 4 Core calculator · medium

\(v = u + at\). Find \(v\) when \(u = 12\), \(a = 9.8\) and \(t = 2.5\).

Show the worked answer
  1. \(v = 12 + 9.8 \times 2.5\)
  2. \(9.8 \times 2.5 = 24.5\), so \(v = 36.5\).

Answer: \(v = 36.5\)

Question 5 Core non-calculator · medium

The cost, \(T\) dollars, of hiring a hall for \(n\) hours is \(T = 5n + 40\).
(a) Find the cost of hiring the hall for \(6\) hours.
(b) The cost was $\(105\). For how many hours was the hall hired?

Show the worked answer
  1. (a) \(T = 5 \times 6 + 40 = 70\)
  2. (b) \(5n + 40 = 105\), so \(5n = 65\) and \(n = 13\).

Answer: (a) $\(70\) (b) \(13\) hours

Question 6 Core non-calculator · medium

Find the value of \(2x^3 - x^2 + 5\) when \(x = -3\).

Show the worked answer
  1. \(x^3 = -27\), so \(2x^3 = -54\).
  2. \(x^2 = 9\).
  3. \(-54 - 9 + 5 = -58\)

Answer: \(-58\)

Question 7 Core non-calculator · medium · 2 marks

Find the value of \(2x^2 - 3x\) when \(x = -2\).

Show the answer and mark scheme
  • M1 2 × (−2)² − 3 × (−2) or 8 + 6
  • A1 14

Answer: \(14\)

Question 8 Core calculator · medium · 2 marks

The area of a trapezium is \(A = \frac{1}{2}(a + b)h\). Find \(A\) when \(a = 6.4\), \(b = 9.2\) and \(h = 3.5\).

Show the answer and mark scheme
  • M1 ½ × (6.4 + 9.2) × 3.5
  • A1 27.3

Answer: \(27.3\)

Question 9 Core calculator · hard

\(s = ut + \frac{1}{2}at^2\). Find \(s\) when \(u = 4\), \(a = -1.5\) and \(t = 6\).

Show the worked answer
  1. \(ut = 4 \times 6 = 24\)
  2. \(\frac{1}{2}at^2 = \frac{1}{2} \times (-1.5) \times 36 = -27\)
  3. \(s = 24 - 27 = -3\)

Answer: \(s = -3\)

Questions students ask

Which Cambridge 0580 papers can test algebraic expressions and substitution?

Algebraic Expressions and Substitution is on both tiers (syllabus 2.1), so it can come up on Core Papers 1 (non-calculator) and 3 (calculator), and Extended Papers 2 (non-calculator) and 4 (calculator). Extended candidates also need the Extended parts listed on this page. Half of each tier's marks are on a non-calculator paper, so practise the non-calculator questions without one.

Are these Cambridge past-paper questions?

No. Every question here was written for IGCSE Math Revision in the style of the 0580 papers, and each answer was checked independently before publishing. For real exam practice, use the Cambridge past papers linked from our 0580 past papers page.

Where can I practise more algebraic expressions and substitution questions?

In the 0580 practice for topic 2 (Algebra and graphs), where every question is marked and tagged Core or Extended. Practice is part of the IGCSE plan, with a free preview; the questions on this page are free.
