Kinematics questions with full solutions for Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A (4MA1), Higher tier. Read the worked example first, then try the 3 exam-style questions yourself and check your working against the mark scheme.
Differentiation 6: Kinematics (s, v, a): Using differentiation for displacement, velocity and acceleration in a straight line.
Kinematics worked examples
Worked example 1: Kinematics
A particle has displacement \(s=2t^3-3t^2\) metres at time \(t\) seconds. Find its velocity and acceleration at \(t=3\).
Solution
\(v=\dfrac{ds}{dt}=6t^2-6t\); at \(t=3\): \(36\) m/s.
\(a=\dfrac{dv}{dt}=12t-6\); at \(t=3\): \(30\) m/s².
Answer: \(v=36\) m/s, \(a=30\) m/s²
Tip: Differentiate s to get v, and v to get a.
Kinematics exam-style questions
Try each question before you open the answer. The mark schemes use Edexcel-style marks: M for method, A for accuracy (after the method mark), B for an independent result.
Question 1 · medium · 2 marks
A particle moves along a straight line. Its displacement, \(s\) metres, from a fixed point O at time \(t\) seconds is \(s = 4t^3 - 2t\). Find the velocity of the particle when \(t = 2\).
Show the answer and mark scheme
M1 v = 12t² − 2
A1 46 m/s
Answer: 46 m/s
Question 2 · medium · 2 marks
The velocity, \(v\) m/s, of a particle at time \(t\) seconds is \(v = 3t^2 + 5t\). Find the acceleration of the particle when \(t = 4\).
Show the answer and mark scheme
M1 a = 6t + 5
A1 29 m/s²
Answer: 29 m/s²
Question 3 · hard · 3 marks
The displacement of a particle is given by \(s = 2t^3 - 15t^2 + 36t\), where \(s\) is in metres and \(t\) is in seconds. Find the acceleration of the particle when \(t = 1\).
Show the answer and mark scheme
M1 v = 6t² − 30t + 36
M1 a = 12t − 30
A1 −18 m/s²
Answer: −18 m/s²
Every question and worked example here is original, written for IGCSE Math Revision rather than copied from Pearson papers, and each answer was re-solved independently before publishing.
Either Higher tier paper, 1H or 2H, can test kinematics: both cover the whole Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A (4MA1) specification and both allow a calculator. Show your method, because most marks are for working.
