What the syllabus asks

Summarised in our own words: check the exact wording in the official 0580 syllabus.

Fractions, Decimals and Percentages questions: Core

For everyone: Core students (Papers 1 and 3) and Extended students (Papers 2 and 4).

Question 1 Core non-calculator · easy

Write \(0.35\)
(a) as a fraction in its simplest form
(b) as a percentage.

Show the worked answer
  1. (a) \(0.35 = \frac{35}{100}\). Divide top and bottom by \(5\): \(\frac{7}{20}\).
  2. (b) \(0.35 \times 100 = 35\%\).

Answer: (a) \(\frac{7}{20}\) (b) \(35\%\)

Question 2 Core non-calculator · easy

Without a calculator, convert \(\frac{7}{16}\) to a decimal.

Show the worked answer
  1. \(\frac{1}{16} = 0.0625\) (half of \(\frac{1}{8} = 0.125\))
  2. \(\frac{7}{16} = 7 \times 0.0625 = 0.4375\)

Answer: \(0.4375\)

Question 3 Core calculator · easy · 1 mark

Write \(\frac{7}{40}\) as a percentage.

Show the answer and mark scheme
  • B1 17.5%

Answer: \(17.5\%\)

Question 4 Core non-calculator · easy · 1 mark

Write these temperatures in order, starting with the lowest: \(3^\circ\text{C}, \quad -7^\circ\text{C}, \quad 0^\circ\text{C}, \quad -1^\circ\text{C}, \quad -4^\circ\text{C}\)

Show the answer and mark scheme
  • B1 −7, −4, −1, 0, 3 cao

Answer: \(-7^\circ\text{C},\ -4^\circ\text{C},\ -1^\circ\text{C},\ 0^\circ\text{C},\ 3^\circ\text{C}\)

Question 5 Core non-calculator · medium

Write these numbers in order of size, starting with the smallest.
\(0.6, \quad \frac{5}{8}, \quad 62\%, \quad 0.606\)

Show the worked answer
  1. Write each as a decimal: \(0.6 = 0.600\), \(\frac{5}{8} = 0.625\), \(62\% = 0.620\), \(0.606\).
  2. In order: \(0.600, 0.606, 0.620, 0.625\).

Answer: \(0.6,\ 0.606,\ 62\%,\ \frac{5}{8}\)

Question 6 Core non-calculator · medium

Write the correct symbol, \(\lt\), \(=\) or \(\gt\), between \(\frac{4}{7}\) and \(0.57\).

Show the worked answer
  1. \(4 \div 7 = 0.5714\ldots\)
  2. \(0.5714\ldots\) is bigger than \(0.57\).

Answer: \(\frac{4}{7} \gt 0.57\)

Question 7 Core non-calculator · medium · 2 marks

Write \(64\%\) as a fraction in its simplest form.

Show the answer and mark scheme
  • M1 64/100
  • A1 16/25

Answer: \(\frac{16}{25}\)

Fractions, Decimals and Percentages questions: Extended

Extended content, for Papers 2 and 4. Core students can skip these.

Question 8 Extended non-calculator · medium

Write the recurring decimal \(0.\dot{4}\dot{5}\) as a fraction in its simplest form.

Show the worked answer
  1. Let \(x = 0.454545\ldots\)
  2. Two digits recur, so multiply by \(100\): \(100x = 45.4545\ldots\)
  3. Subtract: \(99x = 45\), so \(x = \frac{45}{99} = \frac{5}{11}\).

Answer: \(\frac{5}{11}\)

Question 9 Extended non-calculator · hard

Write the recurring decimal \(0.2\dot{7}\) as a fraction in its simplest form.

Show the worked answer
  1. Let \(x = 0.2777\ldots\)
  2. \(10x = 2.777\ldots\) and \(100x = 27.777\ldots\)
  3. Subtract: \(90x = 25\), so \(x = \frac{25}{90} = \frac{5}{18}\).

Answer: \(\frac{5}{18}\)

Questions students ask

Which Cambridge 0580 papers can test fractions, decimals and percentages?

Fractions, Decimals and Percentages is on both tiers (syllabus 1.4, 1.5), so it can come up on Core Papers 1 (non-calculator) and 3 (calculator), and Extended Papers 2 (non-calculator) and 4 (calculator). Extended candidates also need the Extended parts listed on this page. Half of each tier's marks are on a non-calculator paper, so practise the non-calculator questions without one.

Are these Cambridge past-paper questions?

No. Every question here was written for IGCSE Math Revision in the style of the 0580 papers, and each answer was checked independently before publishing. For real exam practice, use the Cambridge past papers linked from our 0580 past papers page.

Where can I practise more fractions, decimals and percentages questions?

In the 0580 practice for topic 1 (Number), where every question is marked and tagged Core or Extended. Practice is part of the IGCSE plan, with a free preview; the questions on this page are free.
