Starter

  1. 42
    • 6 × 7 = 42
  2. 9
    • 9 × 9 = 81

Round 1: Number

  1. 7.2 × 10−4
    • Move the decimal point 4 places.
  2. 42
    • 84 = 2 × 42, 126 = 3 × 42
  3. £276
    • 240 × 1.15 = 276
  4. 4/9
    • 10x − x = 4
  5. £120
    • 96 ÷ 0.8 = 120

Round 2: Algebra

  1. x = 4
    • 5x = 20
  2. (x − 4)(x − 5)
    • −4 × −5 = 20 and −4 + −5 = −9
  3. 5n + 2
    • Difference 5; 7 − 5 = 2
  4. x = 7, y = 3
    • Add: 2x = 14
  5. x = 3 ± √5
    • (x − 3)2 = 5

Round 3: Shape and space

  1. 32 cm2
    • ½ × (6 + 10) × 4 = 32
  2. 135°
    • Exterior angle 360 ÷ 8 = 45
    • 180 − 45 = 135
  3. 15 cm
    • √(81 + 144) = 15
  4. 14π cm
    • r = 7
    • 2π × 7 = 14π
  5. 270 cm3
    • Length scale factor 3/2, volume scale factor 27/8
