IGCSE vs GCSE Maths: which is harder?

How GCSE Maths compares with the two main IGCSE courses, Edexcel International GCSE (4MA1) and Cambridge IGCSE (0580): the papers, the calculator rules, the grades and the content, with example questions side by side.

The short answer

Neither is simply harder. At the top end, both IGCSEs go further: Higher 4MA1 and Extended 0580 include some calculus, and GCSE has none. But GCSE has a non-calculator paper, and Edexcel 4MA1 has none, so for some students GCSE feels harder.

The grades are on different scales too: GCSE and 4MA1 use 9 to 1, while Cambridge 0580 (this syllabus) uses A* to G. Choose by what your school offers and how you work best, not by reputation.

What students find hard

This is our view from teaching these courses, not a statistic. We don't quote pass rates here: the exam boards publish their own results each year.

Try it: questions side by side

Each pair takes the same idea at two levels. Try both before you open the answers.

Without a calculator (GCSE Paper 1, 0580 Papers 1 and 2)

Without a calculator, work out 3/8 of 960.

Show the answer

Answer: 360

  1. 960 ÷ 8 = 120, and 120 × 3 = 360.

Calculator allowed (every 4MA1 paper)

Work out (4.72 + √30.25) ÷ 1.6. Give your answer correct to 3 significant figures.

Show the answer

Answer: 17.2

  1. 4.72 = 22.09 and √30.25 = 5.5, so the top is 27.59.
  2. 27.59 ÷ 1.6 = 17.24375…, which is 17.2 to 3 significant figures.

GCSE Higher (no calculus)

The line L passes through the point (2, 5) and is parallel to the line y = 3x − 2. Find an equation of L.

Show the answer

Answer: y = 3x − 1

  1. Parallel lines have the same gradient, 3.
  2. 5 = 3 × 2 + c gives c = −1, so y = 3x − 1.

4MA1 Higher and 0580 Extended (differentiation)

Find the gradient of the curve y = 2x3 − 5x at the point where x = 2.

Show the answer

Answer: 19

  1. dy/dx = 6x2 − 5.
  2. At x = 2: 6 × 4 − 5 = 19.

How to get ready

Whichever you take, the same habits work: secure your number and algebra skills, practise little and often, and use past papers from your own board in the final months.

Common questions

Is IGCSE Maths harder than GCSE Maths?

Not overall. The top tiers of both IGCSEs include differentiation, which GCSE does not, but GCSE has a non-calculator paper and Edexcel 4MA1 does not. Which feels harder depends on the student.

Do IGCSE and GCSE use the same grades?

Edexcel 4MA1 uses 9 to 1, like GCSE. Cambridge 0580 uses A* to G on the current syllabus: A* to E on Extended and C to G on Core.

Is IGCSE good preparation for A Level or IB maths?

Yes. The top tiers of both IGCSEs include some differentiation, which gives you a head start on calculus. Whatever you take, secure algebra matters most.

Can I practise both here?

Yes: the 4MA1 hub and the 0580 pages, and Pass GCSE Maths for the GCSE grade 4 basics.
